how to watch video on my tv, from an usb storage unit?

I own a KDL40bx400.

I have some videos (MP4) on an usb harddrive. when i connect it, noting happens. According to the instruction manual, the tv should show the files but nothing appears.

What am i doing wrong?

Robsen11,

Hi and welcome,

your tv should pick it up and you will most probably have to register it to your tv,

also you have not said if the USB drive is powered or not,

Sony recommend the use of a powered hard drive.

Hi Robsen11,

Thats more than likely why it wont, Sony recommend the use of western digital my book essentials which is a powered usb drive, theres no reason others will not work as long as it has its own power supply, i know and thats before you ask, USB sticks/flash drives work ok but the other wont,

in order to set it up you will find it in the menu somewhere (my tv has gone for a replacement) so i cant talk you through it but its in the menu HDD recording register your device or summat like that.

the usb stick/drive  MUST BE FORMATTED IN FAT or the tv wont see it

CHECK TO SEE, IT MAY BE IN NTFS

once formatted to FAT you should be good to go

reformat to FAT32 and problem solved

Durian40,

we are talking about hard drives!, we know the flash drives work.

the usb hard drives recommended by Sony have to be powered.
