Sync Contacts with GMail and not At&T Address Book?

Is it possible to sync contacts with GMail and not AT&T address book? It seems that with AT&T if you do not have mobile coverage you cannot access your contacts?

When you add a contact in the phones phonebook the phone will ask you where to save it. Only if you select your gmail address it will be synchronized to that account.

If you have added contacts to another account, open Contacts -> [menu] -> Back up contacts -> Internal storage or SD-card. Then restore this backup (Contacts -> [menu] -> Import contacts) and select your gmail address when it asks you where to store them.
