Usage abroad - stop apps updating

I recently went to France: turned off data roaming etc and set a usage limit, but every time I turned on Maps to check traffic etc, all my other Apps decided it was time to update. This used up my daily allowance in minutes. How do I stop the usual apps updating without permission? Then I can restrict my data usage to navigation only.

When you enable data/roaming all apps in the phone will have access to the internet. To avoid high data usage, open Play store -> [menu] -> Settings -> Auto-update apps and set it to not use auto-update or to only use WiFi. Then go to Settings -> Data usage and check what apps you have that use alot of background data. Tap those and select to restrict background data.
