topic e books from public library? in eReaders

Hi PuppyDog,

I've made some pretty similar observations based on my own experience of borrowing eBooks from my local library (York).

This is my take on the situation: you are quite right that you can return a borrowed eBook in Reader Library without it being deleted from your Reader device itself. Actually, it seems that you do have to manually delete the eBook to remove it from the device yourself, so to answer your first question:

You can delete in one of two ways: connect the Reader to your computer and use the Reader Library software to navigate to the eBook on your Reader to delete it or, when you have the eBook open on your Reader, use the Utilities or Options menu (depending on which Reader model you have) to find the ‘Delete Book’ facility).

What happens if you don’t delete the eBook? This has happened to me with eBooks I’ve borrowed from my library, and basically all that happens is they ‘time-out’. They don’t delete automatically, but if you try to open the eBook you just get a message similar to if you were trying to read an eBook that was not authorised with your Adobe ID – I can’t remember the exact wording off-hand, but it’s something like “you are not authorised to read…..”. The bottom line is you won’t be able to read them after they time-out, so you might as well delete it as it’ll just be taking space up in your Reader’s memory.

And so to the anomaly!

I think you’re right about the process you describe, and in theory it could mean that you could ‘borrow’ more than the limit of titles imposed by the library at one time (my library is 4 books too); and I’m pretty sure there is no smart way of preventing you from doing this:smileyconfused:. However, rather than ‘cheating’ your library so to speak, my view is that as we are borrowing a licence to read the eBook in effect, and we can’t stop this from timing-out, then we're not doing anyone any harm.

In fact, my personal view is that what you propose is actually a very considerate thing to do. The reason I think this is due to the waiting list system that libraries operate. With my library, if the eBook I want is already out, then I have the option to join a waiting list and they e-mail me when it’s available and I have a couple of days to respond and download the eBook or I lose it to the next person in the queue. If we were talking about a physical book, then I would have no option but to wait for the person currently borrowing it to return it. But as we are talking about an eBook (licence) here, what I could do (as you suggest), is borrow the eBook, transfer it to my Reader, and then return the eBook from the Reader Library immediately. This way I still get to read the eBook I’ve borrowed for 21 days or whatever, but the library gets their licence back almost straight away (instead of waiting the full loan period) and can lend it to the next person on the waiting list!:smileycool: So, if my assumptions are correct, I’m sure this would only be seen as quite a considerate thing to do for us eBorrowers!

Hope this all makes sense anyway, and I’d be interested to hear if you agree with my assessment!

Cheers!

Yes, the answer is yes, but only certain ones who obviously put things in train before the cuts started.

There is a thread on this somewhere, don't have time to find it now, but about 4 areas provide a digital service. You have to be a member of the Library.

Lots have an audio book service, which can be used by readers.

Check with the area you are interested in.

Don't forget the Singapore National Library, and the library of Philadelphia, both allow foriegn members, Philly costs about $15 p.a., Singapore is totally free.

Huge resources at both.

The beloved coalition have almost ceretainly put the chop on any new plans in the UK , unless a library area is really determined.

For example, Somerset faced closures of over 50% until uproar made them reduce it a bit, but new money there ain't gonna be.....................:smileycry:

Philistines.

But we forget, everybody can easily afford to buy the books we want to read, the research we want to do, the help we might pop in the Library for.........

Sorry, got a bit carried away there.

But all true, sadly.:smileysad:

Hi Jayco52,

Short answer is yes, although like the other contributors to this discussion, I think it does depend on whether your local county library offers the service - where they do it's free. I'm one of the lucky ones - I live in North Yorkshire and I specifically joined the library to be able to borrow eBooks (and come to that, this was one of the reasons I decided to go with a Reader device that was compatible with the EPUB format rather than the Kindle in the end).

The service is great; simple to use, and I like that on the Reader in the list of books on the device, you get a sort of clock symbol with the number of days remaining on the loan (there's also a column in the list view of the Reader Library software on your computer that gives the same information). In my case you can borrow a book for up to 21 days. There's no facility to renew the loan if you haven't finished reading the book, but you can simply borrow the book again - there's no limit to the number of times you can do this.

Happy reading - and I hope your local authority provides the service!

Any 6-digit number works, anyway, and your passport doesn't !

Go to MobileRead and all the details are there - if you still have queries, Losheesh is a very knowledgeable Forum member who gives info about this. If you search "join Singapore Library", "posts" option, or similar, you will get all you need.

And the stff are helpful as well.

Ebooks, fiction & non, audiobooks etc.. Download Overdtrive and Copia and away you go.

Good luck.:smileyhappy:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you cannot lend ebooks from Essex libraries, even if you join online. Once you have joined, you then have to physically go to a library within Essex, with your registration number, so they can supply you with a library card. So unless you live within Essex, no ebooks, I'm afraid. To make sure I was correct, I contacted the library service and received the following response;- 'I'm afraid the ebooks are only available if you have a valid Essex Libraries card as the service is funded by Essex County Council.' You have to live within the the borders of Essex to benefit from the services of its council, including libraries.

I was disappointed too....:smileyplain: I contacted my library service last year, when I first got my reader and was told there was no ebook service and they had no plans to provide one, in the near future. No doubt the cuts played a big part in that.

The situation in Northern Ireland is that most users will be able to download books from the web but you must be a member of a branch in your area. In order to enter the site you must enter your membership number and from that point all is plain sailing. The more members using this service will result in a better and wider selection of books being avalable in Epub format.

Just a point I'd forgotten re: library resources - MobileRead now has a UK specific list of libraries with digital stuff, can't remember the thread, but under resources, and the "header " thread section- or Search- that until recently, was being updated as info came in. By a UK resident.

And elsewhere in this section, as well as Singapore & Philly - which any "foreigner" can join bit of form-filling is all - details of digital libraries anywhere in the world you might be !

Handy for the ex-pat or globe-trotter

Many UK County Public Libraries offer ebook lending, basically you have to be a member of the Library where you live. I have manually downloaded epub books and transferred to my Sony eReader successfully.

To make this easier and less manual process, the Public Library needs to listed on the Sony Web site and the eReader, buth this list is far from complete. For example, there is no Central England region, so Birmingham and Warwickshire not listed.

To get listed the Library has to be registered with OverDrive, a USA Company, and that is where I believe the problem lies. The list is managed and updated by OverDrive who I feel, have little knowledge and interest in our small island and its various counties. I contacted my Public Library (Warwickshire, UK) and they stated they have registerd as required so do not know why they are not listed.

Message was edited by: PaulC_UK

Message was edited by: PaulC_UK

Wirral libraries offer the facility of e books and I have had no problems in downloading it is so easy and such a good service with plenty of titles to choose from both fiction and non-fiction. Audiobooks are also available to download but do take up a lot of space on the Reader. Again, there is a good selection of these to choose from. I also have had no problems downloading from various sources and find "Books on Board" very easy to deal with they have both a US and UK site with many titles in store and at very reasonable prices. I am very pleased with my Reader and have had no problems whatsoever would definitely recommend to anyone. My friend who got a Kindle for Christmas wishes she had a Reader as she is totally tied in to Amazon and was amazed at what my Reader could do compared to her Kindle which, by the way, was also more expensive.

Elain - don't forget (if it's a 650 or a T1 ) you can use the seperate memory card for just your audio, so not taking up space on the hard drive. You can then build up a separate Audio library.....:smileyhappy:

And, to all really, don't forget that their are quite a few (legal) free sites out there, Project Gutenberg and MoblieRead library to name but two, with lots of stuff - mainly public domain, but some excellent versions done by enthusiasts. And you get to keep them !

And many "commercial" sites do offer books for £00- if you're quick ! Hopefully, Reader Store will do this also, it gets authors recognition/renewed interest, and they generally like this !

Also, a good source of new writing and special offers from mainstream publishers is the MobileRead Forums, in Resources, New writers, and Reader Recommendations sections. Also a section giving details of UK specific libraries that have digital collections.

But be careful if you simply Google "Free ebook downloads" - a lot will be "pirate" sites.

Message was edited by: carpetmojo

Message was edited by: carpetmojo

Oh grief, the sites being worked on AGAIN... The edit facility aint working again ....:smileysad:

Here's what I forgot to add re: libraries - MobileRead Forums also has details of all free libraries over the globe - but also have a UK speific section giving details, regularly updated, of UK libraries with libraries with digital collections, and requirements needed.

I managed to borrow a book from my local (Dorset) library today, using the onboard Wifi and my library card number, it was much less painless than I anticipated, but then I was dealing with Overdrive and not Sony, so I guess that's the reason.
