Well, I've just been playing around with this and it definitely does work.

However, I just want to post as I think the info could a bit clearer (for a dullard like myself :P)

Display Name: What you want to call it (e.g. HomePics)

Host: The name of the computer or server (e.g. MyBaseServer)

Share name: The actual folder / share name you've set up (e.g. Photos). You don't need to include the server name in this again.

And then username and password if you've got to log in (don't forget the capitals).

Hi there,

I'm trying to figure out the "Remote shares" feature under "Storage" .. specifically for setting up a "Windows share".

I'm assuming this feature can be used to access shared folders on a Windows 7 machine via Wi-fi. Is this correct, and if so, could you please clarify what should go in the "Host" field?

Thanks in advance!

You can use it to connect to any Windows host using SMB/Windows share.

First set up a shared folder on your Windows computer. Make sure it is working fine and firewall settings allow access from network.

Then open remote shares on your Tablet, hit add new host and select Windows.

In the first field type friendly name. Keep it lowercase, without spaces and symbols. Your share will be visible in /storage/remote/friendlyname

Then type host name. Basically it is the namemof your Windows computer.

In share name type type the name you selected when added new share on Windows.

Those fields are equivalent to \\hostname\sharename in Windows world.

In username and password type the same names you use to access your computer. Haven't tested but it may fail with empty password. You should always password protect your data.

If you are on corporate network you can expand advanced settings and type corporate domain name. Not usedmin home networks.

Hit save and connect.

I've tested it in ES file Explorer, Album, Walkman and Office. It worked like a charm with Synology Diskstation DS213j.

Thanks, SergioPL

I was leaving out the "share name", hoping it would grant access to all the shared folders on that machine. Doesn't seem to work that way..

Adding a specific share name does the trick. I was able to connect, and can confirm it works both in Album and VLC (with a bit of tinkering).

Another thanks SergioPL, This has been driving me bonkers as the only one-app way to get access to my NAS drive and microSD card, without rooting my phone. The key for me was setting the Share name to my share on my NAS drive. I'd called it "Video" on my phone, whereas it's "Videos" on my NAS!!!
