Depending on your remote, supplied with your Virgin Media box, you should be able to program the Virgin Remote to operate a limited amount of options on your Bravia, see here for more info - Virgin Media Remote Control Codes

thats not the answer to the original question though, is it

the Sony remote for the STR-DH820 Amp will not control a Virgin set top box.

No it is not you have answered that, but, I thought it was worth mentioning though..
