January 2024.
SONY A7C II, fw 1.01
I have recently been getting the message 'To perform shooting with this setting, use a memory card higher than SDXC V90.' in video mode.
I get this with Sony Tough G-series cards and ProGrade V90 cards. Camera is set to record XAVC-intra frame, 1920x1080, 25P so not particularly high data rate.
The A7C II only has one card slot. My SDXC are the fastest cards currently available. The camera doesn't have a CFE type-A slot.
I can of course hit OK and carry on shooting as normal but this looks like a software bug? maybe worth letting the engineering team know?
Has there been any change or update on your end ?
I have bought the A7CII last week brand new now finally too and i do own 2 different brand V90 Cards (one is a sony tough), a hand full of V60's. Both tested on a UHS-II V90-able Card Reader.
XAVC- S-I 4K cannot be shot with. Several other Slo-Mo versions neither.
I am getting kicked out every time, it doesnt record and i cannot bypass the mode.
Looking at the few cases claimed, I can’t exclude that it can be an hw issue (I can’t say if on camera or in flash card side).
I’ve re escalated the case with the support. If all the planets will find in a line, maybe that we’ll receive an indication..
Have you tried with ”standard procedure” like firmware updates and factory reset?
Funny, yesterday i could use my german sony account to answer here. Now i need a UK one.
So sorry for the account switch. But Sony seems to have software issues sometimes. ^^
But to get back to your question.
Im a Fullstack Developer.
Ive done 2 FW-Updates via SD Card, 2 Different SD Cards, one reformattet in camera before, the other on the Mac.
Done one Software Reset/Firmware Reset via the Menu.
Doing it once should usually resort in all internal values being set to a default, UNLESS there are severe software issues existing.
Ive programmed microcontrollers, bigger Software Interfaces, Apps and Websites. Alot of Hardwarestuff so im pretty sure my guess is right.
I cant help but think there's somewhere a '<' instead of a '<=' XD
To me it is a specific Firmware issue, that NEEDS to be addressed. Very unlikely being a HW issue.
So yeah, ive done everything i believe that 'might' be "standard" procedure.
Ill write them an Email too today later, refereing do this Blog Post and you aswell, maybe that helps getting them to notice this issue.
Its exactly what im "talking about". 'Higher than V90', means there is something in the codebase like:
...
if 'speed' > V90:
...
instead of
if 'speed' >= V90:
...

Probably is something more complicated. In case of an error like you are saing it should be allways present, but by your stories the issue sometime disappear without any known reason
From my contacts on support the only sense answer is to contact directly https://services.sony.co.uk/supportMVC/en/Contact/
Good luck.
Tell us if something happen
I just had a Phone Call with the Sony Support and know probably WHY in my case it doesnt work.
Not for all cases, but at least mine.
Its not random ...

I bought 2 different 32GB! Cards, both V90. One Sony Tough and one is Sandisk.
The error message is not related to the fact, that the Card is too slow. It has too little 'capacity'.
Its ridiculous.
I believe they didnt allow XAVC-I-S 4K to be recorded on 32GB Cards. Even though the 32GB Card exists and has the more than enough datarate.
Therefore the errormessage is wrong.
Ive let the Support Person forward my inquiry to the Technical Team into why this unclear situation exists.
For what reason do you sell V90 32G Cards, if they do not work with your Hardware. You have to get at least a 64G Card to be able to Record XAVC I-S 4K. 80€ to 150€. (For the tough version). Could also get a 2TB SSD w. 4G/s Write/Read for that money lol.
Kinda like some paywalling bs.
Thanks for the feedback
