Bravia KDL-40EX503 not outputting to 1080p for PS3

Hi there,

I hope that I'm not being completely dumb.  I have just purchased a Bravia KDL-40EX503.  I've plugged in my PS3 with a HDMI cable, which I know works fine (as I tried it on another full HD LCD TV.)  but the PS3 will not accept any other resolution other than 480p.  I've tried all options - 720p, 1080i, 1080p and all revert back to 480.

I've reset the PS3 (holding down power button till 2 beeps) and the unit sees the HDMI cables on reset.

Because I've had the PS3 with this cable working fine not 2 weeks ago, I think it's a setting I've overlooked on the TV itself.  Which is why I'm posting this in the Bravia section and not the Playstation.

I have no idea how to fix this other than the guess I have to set the output of the HDMI to 1080p manually.  This I also do not know how to do.

EDIT:  I've had another go at setting the output to just 720p.  It now flickers between the 720p and a black screen.  The options menu disappears when the PS3 menu does aswell.  It's like it can't decide whether to accept the connection or not and is stuck in a loop.

Could anyone help??  This is driving my up the wall!

The TV is usually quite 'simple' in that it will display whatever is being thrown at it (assuming it supports it) which certainly in the case of 1080p shouldn't be a problem.

You can run the display wizard on the PS3 under the display tab and it will scan to see what resolutions are supported by the BRAVIA. It should offer you basically everything as far as I can tell. If it doesn't then there is a fault somewhere, so might be worth giving the Callcentre a buzz and get them to troubleshoot.

From your description though, you've  done all the right steps in terms of troubleshooting...

Thanks

That's the answer I was fearing!

From other sources with very similar hardware, it was pretty much plug and play.  As you mentioned - the display wizard shows all resolutions as it should.  Which contradicts the fact it won't display any other than 480p.

I hope to try a new HDMI cable before considering send it back as that's quite an expense.

I will phone the call centre after trying a new cable as I presume they will suggest it.

Thank you for the response, Catmambo.

Yes do try a new cable just to make sure. I assume you have tried various HDMI sockets and aren't running it through an amp either?

If the TV is faulty, and you have only just purchased it, then you should be able to get it DOA'd by the retailer and swapped out painlessly.

Thanks

Will do!

I tried them all yes and no amp.  Including the SCART which works fine.

Fingers crossed it's the cable.
