KDL40W5500 Video Format for DLNA Link

Hi All

I have a KDL 40W5500 connected to a DLNA server.  I can play photos and MP3s from the server but would like to know what is the best video format and what free (?) conversion software should I use to convert my DVDs.  I see from the user guide that the KDL supports AVCHD HDV and MPEG2-PS - I have tried MPEG2 and it seems to work OK but is there anything better?
