My VGN FZ21S displays vertical lines, heavily during early boot screens then vestigially whilst running XP

Rel-Installed XP . Its still there. I expect it is the BIOS.

Looking at the advice for updating the BIOS discourages the prudent or timid.

Has anyone Updated a Phoenix BIOS on a SONY?

It is possible that your Vaio has a problem with the nVidia graphics chip. Here is the statement released by Sony in 2009. Does it sound familiar?
