Clean installation system update

Hi Community,

In this hours is rolling out a new system update with the new security patches.

Since this is a system update, I would have to know what is a correct procedure to have a full clean installation to avoid eventual writing errors during the update process over the old files and libraries.

This question I think might be very useful for all system updates, majors and minors.

A technical answer and procedure is very welcome.

there isn't really a procedure on how to properly update the device other than connecting it to Xperia Companion and following the instructions there.

but I can share with you what I usually do when receiving major or large updates, this is just to minimize chances of having bad software and not a foolproof remove all errors assurance..

1.) BACK UP everything .including what is on SD CARD and internal shared memory.Make sure your device has 100% charge and you have stable Internet connection.

2.) perform a factory data reset and reformat your sd card.

3.)perform a software repair using Xperia Companion.. <---- click on the link for more instructions

4.) after the software repair just set up the phone minimally, do not restore data,do not install any apps just enough that you will be able to get to the home screen .

5.) restart your device,

6.) connect your phone to Xperia Companion, now follow the Software Upgrade instructions.

7.) after the update, set up your device minimally again, just enough to get you on the home screen

8.) perform another round of software repair using Xperia Companion

9.) reformat your sd card again inside the device.

take note I only do this with major or large updates, because as you can see the process is tedious. I also do this at least once a year to clean my device..

What you have described is very similar to the procedure I do when arrives me system updates.

The only think I don't understand in what you have written is: if I connect to Xperia Companion my device after have done factory reset, the Repair procedure installs the latest firmware, so how I can do a Software Upgrade (point 6) if the latest one is yet installed?

For me is not a problem the time necessary for these steps, I am more accurate as person

IMO just update and be done with it, it's all good. 

That's how I roll and never had an issue.

in my experience the Xperia companion will repair the installed software version in my device even if it prompts that I Have the latest software ready to install. doesn't that happen to you?

I proceed in this way:

1) factory reset by the device (App>Backup &Restore);

2) when the welcome screen is showed, I open Xperia Companion and connect the device to PC;

3) update the software, when a notification of software update is showed on the PC, following the instructions;

4) when the welcome screen is showed again, connection to PC and perform a Software Repair (that install the latest firmware and system update);

5) at the end of repair, first boot and full configuration as new device;

6) reinstall all apps.

In this way, by factory reset first, I totally clean the device by come back it to factory files ready to be overwritten by the new ones with the system or firmware update reducing to the least possible errors of write during update process.

This is my logical though, but I would have confirm this is correct and logical or not by Sony's support team or other experts.

Update is downloaded and restart phone but not installed...

Hi @bamsic

The cause of problem could be the cache of the Software Update app. I suggest you to clean the cache manually (App>Setting>Memory&Storage>3 dots>Advanced>tap on internal storage>cache) and then try again to install the update.

The most of case, this doesn't solve the problem, so I suggest you a little guide that many users found helpful to resolve the same problem.
