Headphones play music for a few seconds then stop (as if unplugged)

I've had an issue lately with my X Compact that I don't recall having before (and certainly not with any of my previous Xperia phones)

A few weeks ago I went and bought some new earphones (with mic and volume control) and plugged them in to my phone 3.5mm jack and started to listen to some music to see if they were any good. The sound was good, but the problem was the music would just stop after a few seconds! And not stop and keep playing on the screen, it would stop as if the earphones had been disconnected (the icon would disappear from the notification bar)

I thought they were defective, so I returned them and got a refund. But the other day I tried to listen with a pair of headphones my housemate leant me, and the same thing happened. What could be causing this? I've cleaned the jack out thinking there might be loads of dust and lint in there but no, it was fine. The problem still remains. Any ideas?

Thanks

Had a smilar problem with a Z3 compact - it's the headphone jack, and even cleaning it out with a small brush used for getting inbetween teeth didn't help.  Get Bluetooth headphones if you don't want to fork out for getting your phone repaired/be parted from it.  You'll be happy you did anyway.
