General problem solving guidelines

Hi,

You're enjoying your beautiful shiny Xperia smartphone and suddenly it has some hickups.

Let me explain a bit and help you overcome most common problems.

Most problems are caused by apps you installed on your device.

How come.

Not all apps are constructed like it should. Those apps aren't very good at allocating memory and after some time those apps make a mess of your phones memory.

Tip

  • Keep your machine clean and lean.
  • Don't install anything that you come accross
  • Restart your device once a week
  • Delete least used apps (Play-store->my apps & games->installed->sort on last used)

Should you still encounter problems then your first resource is the Support App on your device.

It offers a wealth of information, usefull tips, tests and contact information to Sony Support Service in your own region.

If you want to tackle the problems yourself the first step is to check if the mishap happens in Safe Mode too. In Safe Mode the device starts up with only the preinstalled systems apps running. Disturbance from self installed apps is eliminated.

Tip

  • Go into Safe Mode by long pressing the power button
  • Long press the Restart Icon
  • A window appears with a choice to restart in Safe Mode
  • Exit Safe Mode by restarting the device as usual.

When your device is irresponsive, in a boot loop, has a dark screen or acting weird otherwise you can force a restart by pushing Power button and Volume Up together and holding it until the unit vibrates.

After that you can restart.

When there is a problem you can start testing, finding out which app causes the problem and keep yourself busy deleting the last installed apps.

Often this helps.

Example:

  • You have problems with WiFi, Mobile internet or Bluetooth.
  • Goto setting->system->reset options->reset network settings
  • However is there is an app that is causing problems the problem will return.

Better eliminate all problems.

The easiest and most successfull way is by doing a Factory Reset (you can find that in settings)

or even better a Software Repair with Xperia Companion.

Before you do a Factory Reset or a Software Repair you should save your data.

  • Google Backup on your device should be switched on
  • Check in settings->accounts->youraccount@gmail.com if your account has been synchronised recently.
  • Save you pictures to PC as well, using USB and copying the DCIM directory from device and/or SD card.
  • Save WhatsApps, Signal and other data by backing up the data inside the settings in the app.

TIP

  • After the Software Repair your device is like new, empty and speedy.
  • Do NOT restore everything.
  • When you restore everything you will restore the same trouble that caused the mishap before the repair.
  • Just restore the most needed and commonly used apps.
  • Avoid restoring 'special' apps.
  • You will be rewarded with a speedy, trouble-free handset.

Enjoy!
