Unable to upgrade to hangouts (gtalk replacement)

After the 1st day of Google O/I it was announced that a new app (Hangout) has replaced Gtalk. As Gtalk is built into the Sony ICS (part of root) this will not update. Is there a patch from Sony to move the Gtalk to the phone memory so that we can talk advantage of the new Google Hangouts app from the playstore.

Currently the playstore just launches Gtalk if you click open from Hangouts.

The new update is still being rolled out by Google so it may not be available for all phone and tablets yet. Please see https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.talk:

NOTE: If you aren't yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store "Open" button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!

System apps can be updated from the play store. Maps, Gmail, Youtube are for example system apps.

check again, open your Play store > look for hangout > and you will see that you already have the update. there were also another updates so far I got an update on Google Play Music, google googles, google play books and google search.

In Play Store it shows I have already got the newest Hangouts App.

But in Settings - Apps, it's still the talk app (Version 4.0.4-422743).

I've tried to reboot, and disable then enable. Neither works.

BTW, I'm running official ICS on Xperia U.

I did get the same updates but hangouts (replaces gtalk) launches Gtalk  I have also tried to reboot / disable gtalk.

Same problem

I'm on .55 BTW

yeah I noticed the same on all my Xperias, perhaps we have to wait for Google to release a G+ update too

If I get it right, it seems the new "Google Messaging" app/services is a key to run new Hangouts.

I've found a solution / workaround.

You need to sign into the playstore from your desktop, its shown as "install" then you can start to use it.

But in my Play Sotre in desktop, it shows "installed".

I think is still rolling out, even if it says that we have it, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.talk&feature=search_result#?t=W251b...

it says installed, I can not select any of my xperias as according to google I have them on all my Xperias which doesn't make sense as I haven't update them just one

Not sure, maybe your right Uliwooly. When I went to the playstore it shows "install" so I was able to click it. (on my phone it was already installed).

Now that its installed it doesn't give me any option to either uninstall or re-install.

Maybe its rolling out and I got it by fluke.
