Xperia S usb connectivity problems

I have some issues with the connectivity of USB, the computer recognizes the phone and PC Companion also, the file manager and transfer works correctly, but the problem is when I try to use the "back up and restore" or when I try to connect the phone and PC using wifi, in the  step of connect the USB, or when try to use my phone like modem with usb connectivity. Always PC companion freeze and no response and I can't open the "my pc" window, its freeze and no response also, But unfreezes immediately when I unplug the USB cable. I had tried on 3 pc different and the problem is the same, using windows 7. My phone is updated with Android 4.1.2 and build number 6.2.B.1.96

That's odd, I think is the PC(s)

Odd is that the problem is with 3 PCs different, I think that is improbable that the problem is the PCs

Is the backup you are trying to make large?Because that is the time when PC companion uses to freeze.

I also have this same INFURIATING problem with PC Companion and it's been driving me up the wall for months - you try and do a backup, and I mean everything (comes to about 5GB of data) and it takes long enough to PREPARE the data - then when it's actually backing up, the progress bar gets about 3/4 of the way along and then the PCC window just goes black, and says "Not responding" - I can't perform a backup of my phone also. I've tried leaving it on this screen for hours, but I know that nothing is happening, because none of the data read/write stats in Task Manager are moving.

I've tried doing a backup with the basic things, like contacts, messages etc, whilst leaving heavy things like photos, music and videos unticked - it says it needs about 200KB to backup this data. But that fails too!

The Backup app on the phone also is useless.

Sorry to kind of hijack your thread but I just wanted you to know you are not alone in this problem. It seems whatever size of the backup you want to make, PCC will fail.

I suggest you try and backup small packs of data(contacts, messages) with myphone explorer.

Thanks - I already use MPE.

But what can I  use to backup all my photos, videos and music. If I get a new phone, I have no easy way to transfer it all if the backup tool isn't working.

I don't understand why it freezes up so bad. It needs addressing by Sony, surely. It's clearly a bug in the program.

Report the issue to sony.About the other files,I always advice people to copy the files directly to their PC or external hard or where are they backing up.

Seriously, I have had more problems with this phone than any other - ever.

Basically I want to copy music to my phone via USB cable. Now I don't remember this ever being a problem before but it has got to be the buggiest procedure ever and I was wondering if anybody else has these problems.

I plug my phone in and then Windows Explorer pops up with the Xperia S explorer window, showing the free space etc (that part takes long enough) I then go into the folder and it seems to take forever for the file system on the phone to come up on the screen (it kind of comes up gradually, but you have to wait until it's all done or Windows gets fussy and tells you the device is busy)

Now, I copy some music folders from "My Music" and paste them into the "Music" folder on the phone. The progress bar comes up in Windows and starts to move but the copy process is always VERY SLOW - and then, it will eventually just stop. Bang. No further action. It doesn't stop after any specific time, it is just totally random. I then have to phyiscally unplug the phone because cancelling the copy dialog box does nothing until I do so. I then have to reconnect the phone and go through the procedure again, and have it fail again and so on.

I am guessing part of this is down to the MTP file transfer method, which I absolutely despise, but even so, I am sure this never used to be a problem.

What the **bleep** is wrong with this phone? This problem links in to another problem I have where I can't back up the phone using PCC - it will just stop responding.

How can I be convinced that my next phone will be a Sony (been loyal since 2006) when you can't even simply and quickly copy music to my device??

OK this is now driving me nuts....does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? I've emailed Sony support and received nothing but a stock general answer of "try a repair" or "turn off your anti virus"

  • I have been trying to MOVE many pictures from my phone to my PC - but half the time the progress bar will stop half way and just sit there, meaning I have to unplug.
  • EVEN IF IT DOES work, despite me MOVING (not copying) the images from my phone to the PC in Windows Explorer, the images stay on my phone!! This never used to happen and is driving me mad.
  • Lastly, backup and restore in PCC - I have now tried on my Windows 8 laptop and my Windows 7 PC - and both times this is the result:

PCC error.jpg

Clicking anywhere on the Window then just says it's not responding and asks me to wait or close. If I wait, nothing happens for hours. Then eventually I will get a screen saying the backup failed. The progress bar whilst backing up goes fine up until the last 10% or so, when it just freezes up.

For this to happen on one PC may be excused, to happen on both means something is up with the software.

How do I remove and re-install the drivers for my phone? Am I right in thinking it has no drivers because it is MTP?

It is MTP causing these issues. It's ridiculous that I can't perform copy/move/backups on my phone without these major issues.

It would be nice to hear from Sony on this matter which is incredibly frustrating!!!
