Sony Vaio VGN-FS515B

I have a Sony Vaio that was given to me for repair as it was dead, it had some liquid damage on the motherboard, small amount, so I got a replacement working one from Ebay... (groan I can here you say) The software on the HDD is licenced to that hard drive serial number so I have no option..

I swapped all of the components across cpu, memory etc and hey presto it worked fine..booted, started XP logged in and away you go..

However a day later I went to it after leaving it on soak test for a few hours and it was switched off.. I pressed the power button and now all 3 lights for the num lock, caps lock etc are on all of the time. I can hear the HDD spin up but I now have no display at all where it was previously working fine, all the LEDS at the front are okay... If I press and hold the power button the unit responds with a power down.. No fan starts up or error beeps from BIOS.. Not even sure how far the POST is getting if at all...

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Thanks

Paul..

Hi Paul,

Maybe some of the other components were damaged slightly in the water, when you swapped them into the new motherboard maybe they killed it?

Though as nothing at all is spinning up maybe the PSU has been damaged?

Sorry this isn't of much help, but maybe be some help.

Hi binbash, The HDD is spinning up everything is powering up just no screen output, no POST (Power On Self Tests) beeps or any other activity, just the LEDS are on, I can't see what is going on. I have connected an external monitor... no change.. when I press and hold the power button it powers off as normal it's just that I cannot see the boot process and am not sure how far down the process it's getting...very strange.. I'm thinking that maybe the CPU is what has packed up as that's where the boot process starts.. it locates the BIOS ROM at FFFFFFF0h and then starts POST but it doesn't even seems to be getting there...:(
