Where is the hard drive kept on a VGN-A317M Laptop

I'm looking to change my har drive to a bigger one but don't know where to look for the hard drive. I think it's under the keyboard but i might be wrong.

Can anyone help?

Hi wizardtee and welcome.

The HDD on the A-Series Vaios is under the Palmrest - at the front-left when using the Vaio.

Unfortunately, it requires some disassembly to get at it. The keyboard and then the palmrest need to be removed.

Google for vgnA.pdf for disassembly instructions and which screws to remove.

You don't say if you are going to reinstall the original operating system (XP) from Recovery Discs, but if you are make absolutely sure your new hard drive is NOT of the new Advanced Format type. Check the specifications of the new drive to make sure it is formatted with 512 bytes per sector. Most newer large hard drives are formatted with 4K bytes per sector - these drives will not be recognised by the Recovery Media.
