WH-1000-XM3 Playing Notification Sounds While the Phone is on Silent or Do Not Disturb

Since a few days ago, my WH-1000-XM3 have been playing notification sound while i listen to music if they come through, even though I usually have my phone on silent. This issue continues even after the headphones are disconnected, and the notification sounds will continue to play on the phone despite silent mode or do not disturb. It seems like the headphone makes the phone treat notification sounds under media sounds rather than ringtone sounds as the volume of these notification sounds are dependent on the media volume, hence why putting the phone on silent does not work (But muting media sounds does).

This is not an issue with my phone as I had tested it out with 2 phones, and this issue only pops up after these headphones are connected for the first time following a reboot. This issue then persists afterwards until the phone is reboot again.

Hey there,

The Sony XM3 actually has the option to control Notification and Voice Guidance through the Headphones connect app. I suggest that you try these settings and check if it makes any difference: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/hpc/v1/en/contents/TP0002088741.html?search=notification

Hiya, Thanks for trying to help.

I have tried fiddling with these settings in the connect app when the issue first came up and they haven't made a difference.

However, I noticed yesterday that the issue miraculously fixed itself (After me neglecting to use it for the past few days due to this problem) and I tested again and the issue did not return.

This is surprising as the last attempt to fix these headphones did not work so I left it alone for the past couple of days, but I'm glad it fixed itself and I hope the issue does not return.

Lesson learnt however is that don't update your headphone firmware if you're happy with the performance of your headphones! There have been numerous threads about this causing issues.

Sony support has also been rather lacking on this issue. While I understand that it's hard for them to diagonise the issue without physically having the headphone the response time has beenlong and most of the offered solutions are basic operations that most people would have tried already. This is a shame as these headphones are no doubt the best in their class. I'd recommend buying noise cancelling headphones from another brand for potential new buyers if you're looking for consistency and better customer support rather than absolute performance.

I'm having the exact same issue since firmware 4.1.1.

A few months ago you could stop the notification sounds by switching the NC/AMBIENT switch to ambient sound control from a voice assistant, but since the 4.1.1 update all notification sounds are playing at full volume, over any music, regardless of the notification sound profile of the phone.

I do not want to hear notification sounds through my headphones. Ever. I want to hear my music.

HI Juhmikay,

I do believe this is related to the phone itself. As the headset only produces the sound according to the signal that has been input by the connected device.

Thank you for replying.

However, I've taken a look at the past posts and found that several people have spoken about the same fault, dating back to a week or two ago, with none of them resolved.

These headphones have been rendered unusable for me as their purpose was so I'm not disturbed when I work, which is obviously not possible following this fault.

I'd like to ask whether you'll be able to provide me with a timescale of when this issue will be fixed, or the possibility of an exchange or refund.

Hi Xudong,

Have you made sure that the phone you're using is fully compatible with the headphones? I can see the compatible devices listed under the compatibility section here: https://bit.ly/2X6a8wM.

Thank you for your reply.

I have had a look at the list and it turns out both of my phones (Oneplus 5 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro) are not present on the list.

However, note that these headphones worked perfectly prior to the firmware update with both of these phones.

In the case that this issue won't be fixed due to it not being a compatible phone, I would like to request a refund in these headphones. It is unreasonable to expect consumers to look up a compatibility list while purchasing something universal such as headphones, especially if they do not know of its existence.

Hi Xudong,

I understand what you're saying, but, my point is that the devices that have been tested to work perfectly with the headphones are usually listed under the compatibility section.

Apart from this, have you tried initializing the headphones? This link explains how to do that: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm3/v1/en/contents/TP0001703081.html

Hey,

I have initialised the headphones previously and that hasn't solved the issue. I just did another initialization and issue still persists.
