Can't connect to VPN server using L2TP

I can't get my email to work on my Experia J.  It has worked fine right up until a fortnight ago.  I keep getting the message 'Cannot connect to server'.  I've tried via Settings>More.account set-up but am either not providing the correct information or having some other trouble.

I enter my email address and usual email password and then the next box asks what type of account and provides 3 options - Pop3, IMAP and Exchange Active Sync.  I don't know which to specify but have tried all 3 without success.

I've looked for available networks and chosen the one appropriate for my phone and then tried to reset my account.

Does anyone have any ideas why I still cannot connect to the server.
